A common process that manufacturers use to produce hollow parts or products from Elastollan is known as blow molding. BASF’s Elastollan TPU is ideal for this process because of its superior melt strength, easy processibility and excellent demolding properties.

Extrusion Blow Molding
In this process, Elastollan is extruded into the shape of a hollow tube and then placed into a metal mold. The tube is then inflated with air into the shape of the mold. After cooling, the mold opens and the part or product is ejected.

Injection Blow Molding
This is a two-stage process in which Elastollan is first injection molded into a hollow, heated pre-form mold, which is clamped around a core rod, or mandrel. The pre-form mold sets the initial external shape, while the core rod sets the initial internal shape.

In the second step, the pre-form mold opens and the core rod is clamped into a hollow, chilled blow mold. Compressed air runs through the core rod and inflates the Elastollan, which gets its final shape from the blow mold.
