Windows That Last Longer

Helping windows perform better

In any building - residential, commercial or institutional - proper insulation helps improve energy efficiency and reduce heating and cooling costs. Typically, windows provide the least insulation in many homes and buildings:

  • An average home may lose 30% of its heat or air-conditioning energy through its windows. (Click here for more information)
  • Most windows are 10 times less energy efficient than walls. (Click here for more information)
  • The energy efficiency of windows can be compromised by condensation that can lead to mold formation and the degradation of window's frame materials.

Yet, windows are often overlooked when insulation needs are evaluated. How can you improve the performance of your windows?

Thermoplastic spacers

Whether you are constructing a new property or upgrading an existing one, BASF recommends windows with warm edge thermoplastic spacer (TPS) technology - now available from several leading window manufacturers.

Windows That Last Longer

With TPS technology, inefficient aluminum spacers are replaced with an elastic, energy-efficient thermoplastic spacer.

With more than 100,000 square feet of TPS installed in windows in buildings and homes around the world, this technology is proving to be an effective solution to improve energy efficiency in windows. TPS technology also provides the comfort and durability you need. It replaces metal-based spacers that actually allow heat to be drawn out of a building during the winter, and heat from the sun to be conducted into a building during the summer. As an additional benefit, TPS is flexible, so windows are better able to accommodate stress from wind and impact. This reduces the possibility of a window shattering as a result of high winds and other acts of nature.

BASF invites you to learn more about the benefits of windows with warm edge TPS technology, by simply click on the tab above that best describes you. For window manufacturers, you should know that even the production of windows with TPS can be better for the environment than any other spacer.
