MetaMax® High-Reactivity Metakaolin Concrete Additives

Where to use - Cast-in-place concrete

While the basic components of concrete are portland cement, aggregate and water, additional ingredients are increasingly used to improve the properties of the material. These ingredients include chemical admixtures like water reducers and air entraining agents, mineral admixtures like pigments for colored concrete, and supplementary cementitious materials.

If you have used ready-mix concrete in the past five years, chances are good that there was fly ash in your mixture whether it was specified or not. That’s because fly ash is a pozzolanic material that improves the strength and durability of concrete. If your project required even higher levels of performance, you probably got a concrete mixture containing silica fume – a highly reactive pozzolan. Both fly ash and silica fume have an outstanding track record of performance. But they both have limitations. For example, both are industrial byproducts that vary in performance and have inconsistent coloration ranging from gray to black. And while silica fume can produce very high strength concrete with low permeability, it produces a “sticky” mixture that is hard to place and finish and often requires expensive superplasticizers to make it workable.

Now you have a better choice.
Engelhard MetaMax® high reactivity metakaolin is a pozzolanic supplementary cementitious material that provides all the benefits of other pozzolans without any of the drawbacks. It is a white powder that can be used in white or colored concrete or to brighten ordinary gray concrete; its production is carefully controlled for color consistency. Concrete made with MetaMax is creamy and has better workability. This allows you to create a higher quality concrete finish. MetaMax reduces the potential for mottling, cracking, and efflorescence. Plus, it equals or outperforms even silica fume in producing high strength concrete with low porosity and outstanding durability.

Concrete with MetaMax has been used for dazzling white floor finishes in upscale boutiques, decorative pavement in corrosive coastal environments, robust cast-in-place structural frames in high-rise buildings, and hard-working, light-reflective factory floors. It’s easy to use; just replace 5 to 15 percent of the portland cement in a mixture with MetaMax for affordable, added value, beauty, and performance.
