The roots of BASF's diols business
go back to the laboratory work of Walter Reppe. Recognized today
as the "father of acetylene chemistry," he developed what currently
is known as the Reppe Process or acetylene pressure reactions.
Since Reppe's time, BASF has built upon this technology to develop
a broad base of intermediate products derived from acetylene chemicals.
A variety of products are commercially available or are in different
stages of development. The flow chart below illustrates various
product types available through acetylene-based technology. This
chart is not all-inclusive and many other functional derivatives
are available.
