BASF receives Environmental Achievement award from Conservation Authority
Award recognizes company’s efforts to improve the area’s natural environment

WYANDOTTE, Mich., January 24, 2006 -- BASF has received a Conservation Award for Environmental Achievement from the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) in Ontario, Canada, for the contributions BASF’s Wyandotte site has made to improve the area’s natural environment. The award was presented at the ERCA’s Annual General Meeting on Jan. 19.

BASF was recognized for its work with Fighting Island, a wildlife habitat area certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council. BASF owns the island, which is located offshore from LaSalle, Ontario. Through BASF’s efforts, Fighting Island has been revitalized as a lush, habitable environment that is now home to a variety of wild animals, including deer, coyote, pheasant, hawks, eagles and ospreys.

“BASF is making a conscious effort to improve the quality of the natural resources on and around Fighting Island,” said Ray Renaud, ERCA Chair. “The company is clearly a leader when it comes to responsible corporate citizenship, and we are very pleased to recognize its efforts and accomplishments with the 2005 Conservation Award for Environmental Achievement.”

The ERCA presented 2005 Conservation Awards to individuals and organizations in three categories: Education, Volunteerism and Environmental Achievement. The organization has been presenting these annual awards since 1992.

“At BASF, we are not only committed to ‘helping make products better,’ we are committed to helping make the communities in which we live and work better,” said Ed Nuernberg, General Manager for BASF’s Wyandotte site. “This award represents the combined efforts of employees and area residents who have been instrumental in the revitalization of Fighting Island over the years.”

The Essex Region Conservation Authority was established in 1973 to manage the natural resources of the Essex Region in partnership with member municipalities and the Province of Ontario. The agency’s member municipalities include the City of Windsor, County of Essex and the Township of Pelee Island.

Approximately 800 people are employed at BASF's Wyandotte site, which produces a variety of urethane and specialty plastics products for the automotive, industrial, and electronic industries.
