Maintenance-Free Pool Heater Cabinet Formed from Multi-Layer Sheet with Weather-Resistant LURAN® S ASA Exterior Layer

MOUNT OLIVE , April 29, 1999 -- A swimming pool heater often is kept out of sight behind bushes or a screen, but even so the pool owner does not want the unit to rust or become discolored. The answer to this potential problem is a cabinet made with a protective shield of Luran® S ASA, a weather-resistant plastic.

Peregrine Industries, Inc., Deerfield, FL, recently began making the cabinets for its SmartempTM pool heaters from coextruded thermoplastic sheet. The composite sheet, which has an outer layer made of Luran S ASA and a base layer of ABS, is made by Spartech Plastics, Inc. The sheet combines the excellent weather resistance of Luran S ASA with the toughness, strength and rigidity of ABS. ABS is not a weather-resistant plastic, however, Luran S ASA resists discoloration which sunlight can cause and, unlike metals, it does not corrode or rust.

Luran S is a lightweight, strong, rigid and impact-resistant thermoplastic that has excellent resistance to the effects of outdoor exposure. It is a material widely used to make products requiring excellent weather resistance, including recreational vehicle body panels and roofs, exterior automobile parts, lawn and garden furniture and boat hulls.

Peregrine offers five models of Smartemp pool heaters with the maintenance-free composite plastic cabinets. The quiet-running units have water-flow rates up to 70 gpm and can heat water up to a toasty-warm 104 °F.

BASF Corporation, headquartered in Mount Olive, NJ, and its affiliates in Mexico and Canada, are the NAFTA region members of the BASF Group (Ludwigshafen, Germany).
