Product Stewardship

As part of a transnational chemical company, BASF Corporation is committed to meeting the needs of its customers for high quality products and innovative solutions in a safe and environmentally sound manner and manufacturing products that can be made, used, disposed and/or recycled safely while minimizing the adverse impact on mankind and the environment.

BASF Corporation's Product Stewardship system promotes health, safety and environmental protection as integral parts in the design, manufacture, marketing, distribution, use, recycle, and the ultimate disposal of our products. The successful implementation of Product Stewardship is a shared responsibility of all those involved with a product during its lifecycle, from its initial inception to its ultimate recycle or disposal. By integrating Environmental, Health & Safety issues into business decision-making, BASF manages risk more effectively and promotes the recognition of opportunities and value related to Ecology and Safety.

The Product Stewardship system consists of 12 individual activities that can be placed into three basic categories:

Management Leadership and Commitment
Provides the foundation on which to build a successful Product Stewardship system by addressing the overall direction and resources needed, as well as providing information on the establishment of responsibilities and the
setting of priorities within a business.

Information and Characterization
Seeks to improve hazard identification and risk characterization at every stage of the product lifecycle by addressing the continually growing wealth of information on chemical products. (Link “risk characterization” above to the webpage copy noted below):

Risk Management
Provides information on ways to manage risks at every stage of the product lifecycle.

Through these activities, which are a part of BASF’s Responsible Care Management System (RCMS), BASF Corporation addresses the requirements of the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care® initiative.
