RCMS is an acronym for BASF’s "Responsible Care Management System.” It is a new way of addressing BASF Corporation’s commitment to the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care® initiative.
The primary objective of RCMS is to serve as the system under which BASF oversees and audits its Responsible Care Management System. RCMS allows BASF to establish and implement the processes BASF uses in North America to achieve compliance with regulatory and internal requirements, operate safe and environmentally sound facilities and manufacture safe products. Along with meeting Responsible Care and sustainability commitments, RCMS results in a business advantage for our valued partners. Adherence to the processes in RCMS drives continuous improvement in performance and increases the efficiency and effectiveness of EHS-related activities.
RCMS Components
The components of RCMS are intended to provide an advantage to our sites, businesses and partners. Examples include addressing opportunities as well as risks in the goal alignment process, capturing and sharing best practices and lessons learned through Knowledge Management, and numerous tools in the Product Stewardship area.
The fundamental steps of a management system are typically described as Plan; Do; Check; Act. Following these steps requires assessment and prioritization of risks and opportunities, establishment of goals to address the highest priority risks and opportunities, documentation of the processes used to accomplish those goals, evaluation of progress in achieving the goals, and adjustments to address any problems. A management system approach drives continuous improvement to achieve BASF’s 2012 Sustainability objectives.
A Responsible Care Executive Oversight Committee periodically meets to review the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the management system.
