Port Arthur, Texas

BASF is donating $500,000 to create "Celebrate Success," a new program that will reward the achievements of thousands of Jefferson County, Texas, students with free tickets to events at Ford Arena. BASF will make the donation to Jefferson County in $100,000 annual installments over a five-year period. A student recognition alliance will be established to determine the distribution of recognition rewards. Participating school districts and area non-profit organizations will establish their own criteria for rewarding students with the free tickets. School districts participating in the program are Port Neches-Groves, Nederland, Port Arthur and Beaumont. Non-profit organizations participating are Boys Haven, Girls Haven, Buckner's Children's Village, Communities in Schools, I Have a Dream, and Ben's Kids among others.

The site's "Partnership For A Better Community" is a concept of uniting the strengths of groups in the community to maximize synergy and benefits. By uniting BASF employees, resources, and influence with other groups, such as industry, business, education, government, and non-profit organizations, more can be accomplished together than by individual organizations acting alone.

The ABC Scholarship Program is an excellent example of this philosophy in action. The goal of the program was to mentor economically disadvantaged individuals seeking to enter the construction trades and to remove barriers hindering their success. More than 150 individuals have benefited from the program. The program was developed by BASF and ATOFINA Petrochemicals, Inc., and enlisted 35 mentors from the community, the Port Arthur City Council, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), the Texas Workforce Center, and BASF and FINA employees. BASF, ATOFINA, ABB Lummus Global, and Zachry Construction Company gave a $200,000 grant to this program.

Other examples of Partnership For A Better Community include:

  • The company leveraged a Production Technician training program, building strong relations with Lamar State College in Port Arthur and Brazosport Community College through a training partnership.
  • The company built a partnership between Bridge City Fire and Rescue and BASF employees to train 4,000 Bridge City elementary school students in fire prevention during Fire Prevention Week.
  • White Christmas - employees helped to gather gifts for needy children.
  • Blood drive - through employee championing, a 73 percent participation was achieved in the first year.
  • A donation of $50,000 to the ABC Welding Laboratory.
  • Gift of Life - breast cancer screening sponsorship included a $5,000 corporate gift.
